RESOLVED DUPLICATE of
bug 4821
4575
Unicode characters entered with Blackboard v6 not converted to entities
https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4575
Summary
Unicode characters entered with Blackboard v6 not converted to entities
Arno Bosse
Reported
2005-08-21 19:19:53 PDT
(please click on "Unicode Tests" link on bug URL to access demo page) In OSX 10.4.2, Japanese text from a webpage pasted into a Blackboard v6 text compose window displayed with FireFox v1.06 appears correctly after the page is submitted: Kanji alive ???????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????Mac??Windows?????????? ?? (When you attempt to modify the content in Blackboard, you see Unicode entities but this is expected as the page is encoded ISO 8859-1). Doing the same in Safari 2.0 (412.2 or using WebKit dated 8/19/05) results in the Japanese text not being converted into entities; instead, it appears as a series of question marks. Here is what the text looks like instead after it is submitted: Kanji alive ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Mac??Windows???????????? Note, if instead of the Japanese text, I paste in the unicode entities for this text instead, the Japanese text is displayed correctly after submission: Kanji alive ???????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????Mac??Windows?????????? ??

Unfortunately, this is not easily possible - please see the attached source for the frameset. Please contact me again / reply to bug thread if this does not provide enough information.

The attached source only shows the end result, and apparently nothing about the malfunctioning code. Perhaps someone else will have an idea of what could be going wrong here, but even then having a way to reproduce the problem would be much, much better.

Sorry, I couldn't find a way to modify the page and submit the changes - is there any? This is not a rendering problem (the page source already contains those question marks), it seems to occur when submitting changes. Perhaps, it is possible to test drive the system on the vendor's site?

Yes, it doesn't seem to be a rendering bug - and in retrospect therefore probably belongs in Radar and not here. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to reproduce this on the Blackboard site either without going through an extended process of registering and asking for posting permissions.

I think it still belongs here. I have a idea of what may be going wrong, but I'm not 100% sure if this is the same issue. So, I filed it separately as
bug 4821
. Please track it and verify if its resolution helps in your case.
