VoiceOver is not communicating the aria-checked state of an item with role="option"

Here's a quick CodePen I created to test the issue: https://codepen.io/cordelia/live/XWjRMzy

You'll notice that the checked state is reading correctly in JAWS and NVDA, but not in VoiceOver.

For additional reference, I'm using macOS Mojave Version 10.14.6.
